Summer Enrichment and Arts Academy Each summer under the direction of the Beverly Hills Unified School District, the Beverly Hills Education Foundation administers the summer school program for students from kindergarten through eighth grade. K-8 SUMMER ENRICHMENT PROGRAM Kevin Painter, Principal Registration Information Please review the course selections and complete the registration form. Students enroll in summer classes at the same grade level they will be entering in the Fall. Kindergarten and first grade students select one class. Please use a separate form for each child. First grade and Kindergarten classes are three hours, from 8:30-11:25 a.m. and 12:05-3:00 p.m. Register early to insure your first choice of classes; no class changes will be allowed. Location: Beverly Vista School 200 South Elm Drive, Beverly Hills, CA 90212 Dates: June 28 - July 30, 2010 Tuition: $525 per session (a.m. or p.m.) or $950 for both sessions. No split sessions. Mail the completed form with check or credit card information to: Beverly Hills Education Foundation 255 South Lasky Drive Beverly Hills, CA 90212 checks payable to BHEF Register online (credit cards only) Refunds: There is a $50 processing fee for withdrawal from a class prior to June 8, 2010. ABSOLUTELY NO REFUNDS AFTER JUNE 8, 2010. ALL cancellations must be submitted in writing (by fax or email) by June 8, 2010. If you sign-up for Summer Enrichment and do not attend, you will not receive a refund. NO REFUNDS will be issued upon expulsion or voluntary withdrawal. NO CREDIT for future sessions will be issued. You will receive an emailed confirmation of your cancellation request once it has been received. There is a $50 service charge for returned checks. A three hour class for 5 year-old children who will attend Kindergarten in the Fall. Students in this class will be introduced to kindergarten skill areas such as: Socialization with peer group Listening to and sharing ideas and stories Alphabet and number recognition Sorting and classifying objects Patterning and counting 8:30 a.m. - 11:25 a.m. Kindergarten - “Enrichment” * This afternoon session will focus on art, music, science and other enrichment activities. 12:05 p.m. - 3:00 p.m. First Grade - “Magic” * A three hour class for children who have completed Kindergarten and will be in first grade in the Fall. Students in this class will work on the following areas: Reading and Writing Skills Math and Number Concepts Students will also experience art and music activities, storytelling, drama and socialization with peer group. 8:30 a.m. - 11:25 a.m First Grade - “Enrichment” * This Afternoon Session will focus on art, music, science and other enrichment activities. 12:05 p.m. - 3:00 p.m. * Enrollment guaranteed in these 4 classes if enrolled by April 1st. Academic Enrichment - Language Arts Let’s Brush Up On Those Skills! This course is aimed at improving language arts skills, such as reading comprehension and writing. Students will have the opportunity to read self-selected books and to respond to their reading through journaling and group discussion. We will explore and learn about amazing ocean animals that live in our exciting undersea world and their habitats through literature, writing, art projects and field trips. 8:30 a.m. - 9:50 a.m.Grades 2-3 10:05 a.m. - 11:25 a.m. Grades 2-3 12:05 p.m. - 1:25 p.m. Grades 2-3 1:40 p.m. - 3:00 p.m. Grades 2-3 Experimenting with Science Learn about principles of construction by building a bridge, do experiments in chemistry and physics, learn about electricity, and much more. In this exciting learn-by-doing science class, students will be exposed to scientific concepts by doing actual experiments. The lessons are designed to promote students’ grasp of concepts as well as critical and logical thinking. 8:30 a.m. - 9:50 a.m Grades 4-5 10:05 a.m. - 11:25 a.m.Grades 4-5 Math Mania Students will work with math games, puzzles, worksheets and manipulatives to review and improve fundamentals and math facts. The organizational and learning strategies taught include: organizing homework assignments and agendas, learning a variety of study techniques, developing skills for conducting a research assignment, refining ability to take notes, and preparing for tests. 8:30 a.m. - 9:50 a.m.Grades 6-8 10:05 a.m. - 11:25 a.m. Grades 6-8 12:05 p.m. - 1:25 p.m.Grades 6-8 1:40 p.m. - 3:00 p.m.Grades 6-8 Summer Sports Students who enroll in this course will participate in a variety of sports including Basketball, Soccer, Softball, Volleyball, Ultimate Frisbee and Football in a fun learning environment. Students will benefit from 1 on 1 skill development and enjoy a healthy social environment learning about team sports. Students will learn about essential chords, strumming patterns and basic finger picking techniques. 8:30 a.m. - 9:50 a.m.Grades 6-8 10:05 a.m. - 11:25 a.m.Grades 6-8 Arts & Crafts Learn the basic elements and principles of art and explore a variety of art techniques using two and three-dimensional mediums such as drawing, painting, printmaking, collages, and paper mache. 8:30 a.m. - 9:50 a.m.Grades 3-5 Digital Photography This introductory course will give you the essential skills needed to get started with digital photography. Students will learn about camera controls, file formats, resolution, memory cards and downloading images to your computer. This course covers composition, simple enhancing, printing, emailing photos and image-editing software. Students should bring their digital camera to class, as we'll be taking pictures. Cameras will be provided for those students who do not bring their own. 8:30 a.m. - 9:50 a.m.Grades 6-8 10:05 a.m. - 11:25 a.m.Grades 6-8 Chess Club Learn the basic elements and principals of playing chess. Here you learn critical thinking skills as you analyse a position and become a stronger player. If you are a beginner or even a master chessman this is the fun class for you. 12:05 p.m. - 1:25 p.m.Grades 4-8 1:40 p.m. - 3:00 p.m. Grades 4-8 The Summer Arts Academy “Gotta’ Have Arts” Junior Arts Academy The Junior Arts Academy, for students entering grades 1-5, is an exploratory program providing experience in all four Arts Disciplines: Theatre, Dance, Visual Arts, and Music. 8:30 a.m. - 11:25 a.m.Grades 1-2 12:05 p.m. - 3:030 p.m. Grades 3-5 Arts Academy The Arts Academy is a unique opportunity for students entering grades 6-8 to participate in a Renaissance-type apprenticeship where they choose one course in their desired discipline: Theatre and Dance, or Visual Arts..
